On January 7th, 2026, 37 year old Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. She was a mother of 3, Wife, prize winning poet, and loving daughter.

News of this act of violence quickly spread around the country and caused controversy. When the video from the incident surfaced, many people immediately started placing blame. She was there as part of a legal, peaceful protest against ICE, however many people, including President Trump, called the incident “An act of domestic terrorism.”

In my opinion, the incident is an example of the power from the government we are experiencing. I believe the death of Good could have been prevented with proper training and safety measures. After extensively reviewing the footage, I don’t believe that Good’s intention was the harm the officer, but rather to get away for her own safety. I believe the officers’ careless behavior including standing in front of the vehicle and shooting directly at Good is what made the impact of this event so significant. Had the officer taken proper precautions or been properly trained, she would not have died in the shooting. No one at the protest had deadly weapons except the ICE officers. In a quote from her wife, Becca Good, she says that “We have whistles, They have guns.” focusing on just how profound this incident was.

Since the ICE raids have begun, there have been many acts of violence against the public, including those that are US citizens and protesting peacefully. Ice agents have even been seen locally, in Charlotte and surrounding areas.
