On October 1, 2025, many were bracing for the impacts of the most recent government shutdown. But for one FBI trainee, who was in the midst of their training at Quantico, it meant the end of their career. As on the same day, they received a personal letter from current FBI director, Kash Patel. Notifying them that, effective immediately, they were being removed from federal service. According to the letter sent from Patel, the reasoning was, “poor judgement with an inappropriate display of political signage”.

Throughout the last year, as his presidency continues Donald Trump has made it a mission of his to replace the head of most government organizations. This includes but is not limited to the CIA, the Kennedy Center, the Department of Homeland Security, and as previously mentioned, the FBI. With Kash Patel being named the Director of the FBI on October 21,2025. In the time that Patel has been in office, he’s had many members removed from the organization, for a variety of reasons.

One week prior to the current trainees removal, over a dozen FBI agents were fired. Due to evidence of them kneeling at a protest related to George Floyd in 2020. Although the agents argued that the kneeling wasn’t a matter of political beliefs, and was done in an attempt to deescalate the situation. They were still removed from their positions, even though an investigation at the time, found that there were no grounds for discipline. This has all been a part of a trend in the recent administration’s crusade against progressive Ideals.

The trainee at the center of the situation, whose identity has not been released to the public. Is no stranger to the FBI, as they worked in the organization’s LA office as the diversity coordinator. But due to the recent closing of the FBIs office of  diversity and inclusion, they re-entered the organization as a field trainee. But the situation stems from their time as the diversity coordinator. As the previously mentioned piece of political signage refers to a pride flag that they had on their desk at the time.

The letter then went on to state, “After reviewing the facts and circumstances and considering your probationary status, I have determined you exercised poor judgment with an inappropriate display of political signage in your work area during your previous assignment at the Los Angeles Field Office. Pursuant to Article II of the United States Constitution and the laws of the United States, your employment with the Federal Bureau of Investigation is hereby terminated,”

These past few instances have left many worried, as similar to the incident with the trainee. Last February, the department of veteran affairs enacted a law that restricts anything related to pride being shown in the workplace. This understandably has worried many that being a member of the LGBTQ+ community, or even being an ally of it. Can now be viewed as a harmful political agenda, that is now worthy of workplace termination, or an even more severe punishment. But even with laws like this being passed many are still working to either find other government positions to make a difference. Or they are seeking legal advice to confront their unlawful termination.
