Celebrating Día De Los Muertos

Written By Leanna Sheffield Arts and Culture Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the dead in English, is a traditional Mexican holiday celebrated Nov. 1-2 The holiday comes from the belief that the passage between the mortal and spiritual world allows our deceased loved ones to visit during the holiday. November 1st is seen as the day of the children, and is known as Día de los Angelitos.There is also a day devoted to the spirits of pets which usually falls on Oct. 27th.  To invite spirits into the home, altars called ofrendas are created. These consist of photos and important possessions of the deceased. There are also common symbols that represent the day of the dead. Touring Tillman’s Haunted Halls

Written By Lanie Cauthen Arts and Culture Spooks and spectres were the subject of Winthrop’s Ghost Tours – sponsored by the Student Alumni Council.  Students toured Tillman Hall, one of the most notoriously haunted buildings on campus, and learned about some of the building’s most famous ghosts.  “I feel like I'm a firm believer that Tillman is very haunted,” Ghost tour guide Bree Jefford said. “Just being in there for a lot of time, I'm like, ‘there's some things there, but i really enjoyed it. Written By Emma Adkins Special Report Early on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025, a 26-year-old man allegedly vandalized The King Center in Atlanta, GA, which honors civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.  Officers of the Atlanta Police Department responded to a call at 4:30 a.m. of reports of unusual activity at the memorial. Once on the scene, they claim they found the suspect Brent Jones urinating in the reflection pool that surrounds both King’s and his wife Coretta Scott King’s crypts and stomping on the memorials' “Eternal Flame”. In today's world that is more often than not through our mass media. Although it is not a new issue, more recently it has become more prevalent in our society.  In the 2024- 2025 school year alone, over 6,800 books were banned in public and school libraries. Most of these bans were because of sexual content, offensive language, religion, LGBTQ+ content, violence and racism, and content deemed inappropriate for certain ages.  We are also seeing more examples of censorship in other forms of media, such as television.
