Spooks and spectres were the subject of Winthrop’s Ghost Tours – sponsored by the Student Alumni Council.

Students toured Tillman Hall, one of the most notoriously haunted buildings on campus, and learned about some of the building’s most famous ghosts.

“I feel like I’m a firm believer that Tillman is very haunted,” Ghost tour guide Bree Jefford said. “Just being in there for a lot of time, I’m like, ‘there’s some things there, but i really enjoyed it. Overall, I had a lot of fun and  I’m going to do it again next year most likely.”

Actors stationed throughout the building explained the story behind some of the most famous ghosts.

One of the most popular haunted tales of Tillman are the stockades that once held the prison laborers who built Tillman Hall.

Students also learned about how Winthrop’s founder David Bancroft Johnson and his wife are buried under the Little Chapel.

Tour attendees got to visit Tillman’s elusive fourth floor – where students are rarely allowed to visit.

“Winthrop is a really old school with a very old campus, so it’s very interesting to hear all the histories it has and all the stories that happened here,” ghost tour attendee Kayli Thorson said.

Money raised from the event went towards the Winthrop Fund – providing support to Winthrop students.

“The alumni council is a great organization,” Ghost tour actor Claire Meuret said. “[The ghost tour] was a fundraiser for the Winthrop Fund…it’s quite a bit of money that we’re able to raise for it. It was just a great thing that showed Winthrop’s community.”
