Fashion is used as a tool of resistance, identity and cultural expression for minority groups. It gives them a platform for their voice and a way of expressing their authentic selves. On campus, students have the opportunity to showcase their personal style through everyday wear. Colors, patterns, textures and layers represent each person in their own unique way. Self-expression is like a picture worth a thousand words. A person may not express themselves verbally, but their outfit can speak for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through on-campus organizations like the Winthrop Fashion Club (WFC), students can practice and exhibit their passion for fashion. The club also uses their platform as a means of promoting causes, such as the Denim Day Fashion Show that raises awareness for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Fashion has historically been a way to make a statement, whether it be political beliefs, showing support for a cause or challenging societal structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Samiyah Heyward, a sophomore mass communications major and member of the WFC, said that fashion has been a crucial part of her self-expression throughout her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFashion has always been a huge part of my life, but it wasn\u2019t until I came to Winthrop that I found my true sense of style. It has always been there for me as a way to express myself when I didn\u2019t feel like I had a voice, and it has seen me through every stage of my life,\u201d Heyward said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
