NAMIWalks: Fighting the Stigma One Step at a Time

Byline: Mia Molfetta

September is known as Suicide Prevention Month, a time of the year that focuses on bringing awareness to suicide prevention, spreading knowledge of where resources are and erasing the harmful stigma around nuanced discussions of mental health.

Winthrop University is partnered with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, a non-profit organization that offers support, advocacy and treatment services for those who live with mental health conditions.

NAMI will hold their annual fundraising event known as the NAMIWalk in Rock Hill in mid-October. NAMIWalk is a walkathon style fundraiser that aims to raise money to fund the organization’s mental health support services and future events, as well as to spread awareness about mental health.

The NAMIWalk event will take place on October 17th at Winthrop Lake, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
