90% of Winthrop Students Vote for Semesterly Professor Gladiator Fight

In record-breaking voter turnout at Winthrop University, 90% of the total student body, approximately 4,404 students, overwhelmingly voted yes on a resolution designating the Coliseum as the location for the official Professor Gladiatorial Combat Challenge.  Nicknamed “The Wingspan Gauntlet” by avid fans, it was adopted by the Board of Trustees after overwhelming support from the Student and Faculty body.  “I couldn’t believe someone didn’t come up with the idea sooner,” said Kyan Feser, a mass communications student.  “It’s time to give these professors a taste of what they put us through on the daily,” said a student only known as Mac. The bracket for the Gauntlet is being created by the Student Government Association, set to be voted on by the wider student bo...

New Ghost Sighted in Tillman Hall

By Lanie Cauthen  Winthrop students document an unreported ghost in Tillman Hall – reported to be the ghost of a 90’s grunge rock fan.  Student Billy Geist documented the ghost over the weekend. The apparition – spotted in typical Kurt Cobain sunglasses – appeared lost in the hallway, but became more relaxed as time passed.  Geist said the ghost was not afraid of him because of Geist’s combat boots and flannel jacket.  “I thought he was just some dude until I got close,” Geist said. “I didn’t know he was dead ‘till I tried to dab him up.” Geist reported the ghost smelled of cigarette smoke. He faintly heard the sound of Pearl Jam’s “Alive”  while close to the specter.  He “hung out” with the phantom until a ___ scared him away.  “He was ...

The Risings Artists of Winthrop

Winthrop University recently chartered and recognized The Rising Artists of Winthrop – a transformative take on what it means to be an art club.  Within the last 139 years of Winthrop University, the arts have played a significant role in the school’s success. From elaborate theatre productions to stunning orchestra performances, Winthrop has maintained a significant place in the larger Rock Hill community as its beating heart. Since its official conception in 1989, the College of Visual and Performing Arts has always had the goal to uplift art students and give them a place to grow. The CVPA has played a big part in the development of Winthrop’s community. One of these developments is RAW – organized by Fine Arts and Sculpture professor Shaun Cassidy. The Union of Student Artis...

RMR Spotlight: The Association of Ebonites

The Winthrop University Association of Ebonites returned to campus last spring after several years of inactivity.  Founded in 1969, they are both the oldest and largest student-led organization that has been active on campus. Like The Roddey McMillan Record (RMR), it was built by minorities, with a mission to promote awareness of the Black community on campus through various educational and cultural avenues.  Attorney Sheila McMillan, for whom this magazine is partially named after, was also intimately involved in the organization as their fourth president. She will appear at the organization’s panel event later this month. The Association is listed on the Winthrop University website as being service and advocacy-oriented.  The name acts as an umbrella for severa...
