MLK Day: Is Celebration the Best way to Honor His Legacy?

On MLK day this year, MLK's family announced that instead of celebrating, they are going to be protesting for more equal voting laws in the United States. While these protests have been supported by many people and organizations (Planned Parenthood, Move On, National Urban League, etc.), last year many voting acts were still stopped in their tracks, and even filibustered, in congress. The King family led the Peace Walk at Washington and protested in support of the Freedom to Vote Act, which would make election day a national holiday and ban partisan gerrymandering, among other things. The Senate began ruling on the bill on January 25th. He also talked at length about the...

Discussing the Effectiveness of Trigger Warnings on Winthrop’s Safety Videos

Winthrop's mandatory safety training videos require students to watch content discussing sensitive topics like assault, abuse, and drug/alcohol use. Because of the heavy nature of the videos, they include a trigger warning button that is supposed to let the listener skip the video during a potentially-triggering part. There is also a section that tells students how the trigger warning button works, explains the language used in the videos, and gives resources for support if a student watching the video becomes upset by the content or needs to talk to someone. Trigger warnings exist to warn people of specific content that could be upsetting, give someone an anxiety attack, or send someone into a negative mind space. Winthrop's first video discusses what someone can do if they become...

Omicron and Winthrop’s Response

On January 7th, students received an email stating that in response to the recent rise in COVID-19 cases and the OMICRON variant, they will be holding a vaccine and testing event on the 11th. However, the quarantine protocol remains ten days for unvaccinated people, and Winthrop continues not to require quarantine for vaccinated students.  In addition, Winthrop is in the process of providing Antigen Tests for students to take for a fee. Winthrop clarifies that they strongly encourage vaccinations for students and staff and report any contact with COVID-positive people.  It is also important to remember that if you test positive, you have to email the Health Office to verify absences due to COVID.  COVID cases have steadily risen recently, especially with the new Omicro...
