Leaving a Legacy

Tatianna Davis, an alumnus of Winthrop and previous Editor-in-Chief of the Roddey McMillan Record, recently competed in the Ms. Wheelchair America competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  “I want to break the stigma that people with disabilities cannot work,” Davis said. “We can only work if we are given the chance to, and I want to create more opportunities for us.” Davis advanced to the national Ms. Wheelchair competition after successfully running for Ms. Wheelchair South Carolina in February 2022. She now represents the Palmetto State on the national stage.  For the state competition, Davis had to submit an application and essay, interview and give her platform speech. Her platform as Ms. Wheelchair South Carolina is “YES WE CAN and YES WE WILL!”, with a focus on “enr...

The Inaccessibility of Winthrop’s Student Publications Office

From heavy doors to small cubicles, the space in Winthrop University's Student Publications Office is difficult to navigate for students with accessibility needs. I have spent almost every day of my sophomore year thus far in the Student Publications office. I can choose from many desktops to work on assignments, and the serene environment has become a haven for myself and my other friends, some of which are on staff at the student newspaper. Though I did not join the Roddey McMillan Record (RMR) until a few weeks ago, I was convinced to apply by colleagues who saw my passion for writing and knew that I had stories to tell. She was a brilliant writer from a young age, having written her first of many books at the age of 19, titled "Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism," which would lay the groundwork for intersectional feminist ideology in the coming decades. hooks' primary contribution to the field of activism and feminism was her perspective and focus on intersectionality. MLK Day: Is Celebration the Best way to Honor His Legacy?

On MLK day this year, MLK's family announced that instead of celebrating, they are going to be protesting for more equal voting laws in the United States. While these protests have been supported by many people and organizations (Planned Parenthood, Move On, National Urban League, etc.), last year many voting acts were still stopped in their tracks, and even filibustered, in congress. The King family led the Peace Walk at Washington and protested in support of the Freedom to Vote Act, which would make election day a national holiday and ban partisan gerrymandering, among other things. The Senate began ruling on the bill on January 25th. Bernice King, MLK's youngest daughter, tweeted to politicians publicly celebrating Dr. King that if they truly believe in his sentiments, they woul...

Kevin Sheppard, New Title IX Coordinator, Speaks at Garnet Table Talk

Richardson Ballroom opened its doors to interested students for a meeting hosted by the Council of Student Leaders (CSL) with Kevin Sheppard on January 19th at 7 p.m. He began with a presentation aimed at educating the student body about the inner workings and requirements of the Title IX process. He then showed a TEDx video featuring Keith Edwards about the nature of Rape Culture as a "Men's Issue". Sheppard says he wants to invite Edwards to Winthrop's campus at a later date. He answered questions from a Google Form that attendees had submitted upon their arrival. The questions submitted inquired about the content of the interim policy, his superiors, his qualifications, and other topics related to his experience and intent at the University. He also talked at length about the...
